As with so much of life, the pandemic put a stop to APHA / PracticeUP! in-person workshops for 2020.
But we aren’t going to let a little pandemic stop us, right?
More than ever, patients and families need advocates to help them get what they need from the system. Whether you can offer them medical-navigation assistance, or you can help them wrangle their outrageous (and often wrong!) medical bills – they need you now more than ever.
We want YOU to be one of those advocates who improves patients’ lives by successfully sustaining a practice.
So, since we can’t do our in-person bootcamps or workshops in 2020, instead we’ll bring them to you.
APHA Academy will bring you business courses, all online instruction and access over the course of 100 days to answer all your burning questions about starting and growing an independent advocacy practice!
You’ll learn the skills you need to run a successful business.
You’ll develop the confidence you need to become the advocate or care manager YOU want to be!
Whether you haven’t yet thrown the switch, or you’ve gotten a rocky start and need a good boost in your skill level, or if you think there is value in understanding better how to make you and your practice more effective or efficient – this course is THE course for you!
Start Date: Tuesday, September 8, 2020
End Date: Friday, December 18, 2020 (100 days later!)
25 lessons over 14 weeks: 40-50 hours of instruction in total, includes 4 “live” Zoom events. (2-3 hours per week of lessons plus homework.) There will be a lesson break during Thanksgiving week.
Curriculum (Agenda): All business, all the time, from legal and insurance, to ethics and marketing, from pricing your services, to developing your niche and more. (Find the complete curriculum here.)
CEs will be available for BCPA (Total CEs TBD, will be in the range of 10 to 20, depending on previous coursework you have taken. Find more details in the Course Content Questions section of our Frequently Asked Questions.
Price: = $1499 (plus cost of any textbooks you don’t already own) This INCLUDES a 6-month Premium APHA membership. (Already a member? See APHA Membership in our FAQs for more information.)
Textbooks Required: The three instruction books in the Health Advocates Career Series will be required for this course. Discounts are available. See “Pricing Discounts” in the Registration Questions on our FAQs page.

100 Days to Launch Your Practice

|Week 1||Intro to each other, and intro to this course, plus an overview of an advocacy business.|

|Week 2||Goal setting, services reviews, business formation, choosing a good name for your practice, early decision-making, and a review of certification.|
|Week 3||Finances (budgeting, cashflow, and capitalization) and advocacy ethics|
|Week 4||Pricing your services, working with subcontractors, and use of online tools|

|Week 5||Legal considerations, contracts, HIPAA and advocacy, insurance for your business|
|Week 6||Basics of client acquisition: intro to marketing, creating your niche, choosing target audiences, messaging, and development of your USP|
|Week 7||Marketing best practices, building your narrative, and overcoming objections|
|Week 8||Branding, marketing tactics, measurement, and intro to use of the web for advocates|
|Week 9||Website Week! Build your own website (we will do this together), understanding and utilizing SEO (search engine optimization)|

|Week 10||More use of the web: blogging, social media, email list development, and creating a newsletter|
|Week 11||Thanksgiving (no classes this week but there will be assignments!)|
|Week 12||More on marketing: public speaking and public relations|
